"The recent Pitkin Board of County Commissioners vote to overrule the county Planning and Zoning Commission finding that the airport redevelopment plan does not align with existing land use and planning documents signals a new reality for growth in our valley. 

Years of values-based planning and guided growth management efforts are being stripped from the process of reviews and approvals. For the airport, many of us felt that the right move would have been to fund a new terminal years ago, build it, and then use revenues from airlines, rental cars, private planes and the fixed-base operator to build a new runway and retain the wingspan limitation until we thought fit to lift it. However, it seems the process and product outcomes for the airport were determined years ago by a few powerful players — both inside and outside of the government — who want to allow larger planes in Aspen. Their challenge was how to use a “community process” and “mandate” it by public vote, regardless of decades of study, planning and guiding documents to respect the environment, develop sustainably and maintain quality of life. Now, this is the new reality, and it’s not just about the airport..."

My friend of 35-plus years, Torre, is the most energetic and motivated person committed to public service I’ve ever met. He serves Aspen in ways few know or see. Spend a holiday with him in Aspen, and you’ll see what I mean.

"The race for Pitkin County’s District 1 commissioner is stacked with familiar names: Three veterans of local politics, all with decades of engagement in Aspen, vying to fill the seat commissioner Patti Clapper has held for much of the last three decades. 

...And Torre, a tennis instructor and production staffer with the Wheeler Opera House, has the longest election resume of the three. He served two nonconsecutive terms as an Aspen city councilman and three consecutive terms as mayor, and ran but lost in several other city elections. He put his name in the hat for city councilman again last year, having reached a term limit as mayor, but didn’t secure enough votes in a crowded race to keep a seat at the table..."

DEAR PITKIN COUNTY COMMUNITY,

I am writing to formally share my initiative in running for Pitkin County Commissioner in 2026. I am committed to environmental leadership, public health and safety, responsible growth management, economic sustainability, and improving quality of life across our valley. My campaign is focused on addressing the real and immediate issues challenging our residents, regional commuters, and visitors. 


I will directly address and work to improve housing accessibility, transportation and mobility, water security, wildfire preparedness, mental and physical healthcare, and community connection. These are not abstract policy areas. They are daily realities shaping whether people can live, work, and remain in Pitkin County. I support and defend every Pitkin County resident’s right to health, safety, economic opportunity, and the enjoyment of living in these mountains and valleys. 


As your Commissioner, I will work within a changing landscape of redirected priorities, shifting support, and reduced resources from State and Federal partners. This moment requires not only experience, but active and present leadership that understands today’s financial pressures, workforce challenges, and regional dynamics. I have built strong communication and working relationships with our representatives and will continue to advocate firmly for Pitkin County at both the state and national levels. I bring over 25 years of experience working on these issues and collaborating on solutions that have helped maintain this valley as one of the very best places to live. 


I seek to carry forward the work already underway while preparing Pitkin County for the next chapter, grounded in current realities and future opportunity.

Politics and representation work best when they are shaped by the people. I am here to listen, to work, and to help build the strongest Pitkin County possible through collaboration, transparency, and shared responsibility.
